Photographs of Distinction, Michael OByrne

Back

If ever you have a few days when you wish to get away this summer there is one city in Europe that I would recommend a visit and that is Salzburg in Austria. Steeped in history and the birthplace of Mozart. Overlooking the city is a compound known as the Fortress and here each evening you can have dinner and a classical concert thereafter. Each Sunday in the Cathedral, Mass is on at 10.a.m. and here they have singing that would send you straight to that elusive location in the sky that we are all hoping to arrive at someday. Now the gazabo at the top is from the Sound of Music which was filmed here in the mid 60's and there are tours to all the film location spots. Brilliant when you come home and review the film to see all the hidden gems of buildings etc. When there, a presidential election campaign was in progress and met Barbara Rosenkranz, an outspoken leader of the far-right Austrian Freedom Party, she came second. So when Ryanair start again to fly there just hop on and go, you will not regret it.
