Photographs of Distinction, Michael O’Byrne

About 600 kms. east of Cape Town is Knysna, most popular town in the southern hemisphere so they declare as you enter on a lagoon by the Indian Ocean. They run a train to George a large town about 60 kms west each day and its a steam train that gogs along through woodland, river valleys and the seashore, always packed with tourists and easy to see why. Its one of the most enjoyable train rides I have ever been on. Brilliant value and although they run a shuttle bus for those that do not want to make the return journey by train in my opinion it is a waste as you cannot see the museum or really relish the countryside on the trip back home. You see above the train crossing the lagoon, this photograph was taken previous day. As its going along the shoreline near Wilderness one can see the gliders drifting overhead. The real joy of this trip was in George where a museum of old trains and cars is open to all who have taken the train ride. I saw as you see below the white train carriage for the royal tour in 1947...even had a record player on board...how would they play that when the train was moving beats me but I suspect it was for later when the train stopped.

Further photographs are of a car and Austin Cambridge well known on Irish roads many years ago and up to a few years ago driven by the Alywards of Shankill Castle, Paulstown.
