Every now and then we need to celebrate and on the 12th. August the Butlers got down to just that at Duiske Abbey, Graiguenamanagh and afterwards at Lord Bagnal Inn, Leighlinbridge. Its heard to beat Duiske Abbey as a location to start a celebration, its steeped in history and we got a flavour of some of that in an interesting sermon from Fr. Gerry Byrne, the local Parish Priest. As you can see above, he could say it with his eyes shut!! I found it most interesting to hear stories of the Abbey years ago and the tales of the Butlers involment with the area. One of the chief organiser was Jim Butler, a well known official with the Irish Waterways Association. God help anyone trying to get through a lock on the day following this celebration. After the dinner, we had an auction for the Carlow/Kilkenny Home Care team and they had another Mr. Butler down from Dun Laoighaire, some said he was both a councillor and an auctioneer. Well he racked in the money. We also had a few words from Frank Kavanagh of Kilkenny Castle who enlightened us on the lighter side of the Butlers...they seemed a quite crowd but when their dander was up nothing would stop them. It was a most enjoyable day and many a memory was shared.
Click here do add a comment on my guestbook it will be very much appreciated.
