If ever you are at a loose end with nothing to do for the day and live within striking distance of Blackwater, Co. Wexford. Head down by the handball alley to Ballyconnigar beach and leave the car there. You can walk along the beach towards Raven Point, passing where the D-Day scenes from Steven Speilberg's "Saving Private Ryan" were made. You will pass Ballyvaloo, Ballinaclash and Curracloe. Above you see Keatings old house which due to coastal erosion is now broken and some of it down in the sea. We used to have afternoon tea and scones there. Keatings always had a welcome every summer for the "bathers" from Enniscorthy.
Otherwise if you would like a shorter walk head north along the beach for one mile. Where you see another old roofless house which fell down the bank go up by it and come back on top of the banks. This old house was owned by Dick Whelan the editor of "The Echo" newspaper in Enniscorthy. He was living in the house when some of it fell down the bank. He is now in another nicer house looking down on us all.Sit there an look at the ferry boats come in and out of Rosslare and at nightime the constant flashing lights from Tuskar lighthouse. Heading back you can stop at Pond Cottage. To get a flavour of the area read Colm Tobin's "Blackwater Lightship" who now resides in the locality.
